20 Feb 2018

Candidates for Saturday’s home track two-year-old double-header showed their paces during a busy trackwork session at Matamata this morning.

On the course proper rail where the going was back into the slow range after showers overnight, She’s A Thief (Bayliss) and Bocce (Grob) worked away steadily from the 1000m mark to run the distance in 1:04.1. The Ballymore pair quickened impressively for a final 600m in 36, indicating they have trained on well for their respective engagements in the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes and Reid & Harrison Slipper.

The Real Beel (McNab) and Handsome Rebel (Newman) prepared for the same two races with smart work over 1000m in 1:00.8 and 600m in 36. They were followed by their Te Akau stablemate Sword Of Osman (Bakar), who returned 1:01.8 and 36.8.

Wexford pair Autumn Wild (S Weatherley) and Nirvana In Fire (Yanagida) also ran time over 1000m, returning 1:01.6 and 36.2 ahead of the Breeders’ Stakes and Slipper. The Jacob McKay-trained Slipper duo Gallagher (S McKay) and Tavisan (S Weatherley) were paired over a sound 1000m in 1:02.7 and 36.3, while Brilliant Show (Coleman) and Dispatched (Handley), first starters from the Richardson/Parker stable in the Slipper, reeled off 1000m in 1:02.8 and 37.1.

Other course proper work took place 18 metres out, where Ruby Armani (Bayliss) drew attention to her weekend prospects with an impressive gallop over 1000m in 1:03.2 and 38.

Splurge (McNab) looked ready for a bold run in the Haunui Classic at Hastings when he hit out freely over 1200m in 1:14.6, with the last 1000m in 1:02 and 600m in 37.3. Yearn (S Weatherley), who holds nominations for both Matamata and Hastings, did well to cut out 1000m in 1:02.8 and 38.2.

Hay Tiger (R Jones) and Anevay (Tynan) prepared for the local meeting with a soundly run 1000m in 1:05.2 and 37.2. Age Of Fire (McNab), who resumes in the three-year-old 1400 on Saturday, went with Lady Painton (Newman) over 1000m in 1:06.3 and 37.1.

Hot In High Heels (N Turner) looked in good order for a return to the scene of her last-start win as she strode over the last 1200m of her work in 1:23.5, 1:07.8 and 38.7. Imperium (Bakar) and Wide Awake (Tan) had pace on over the same ground as they recorded 1:18.3, 1:04.5 and 38.5, Our Abbadean (McNab) and Scrutinize (Bakar) also did well to return 1:17.8, 1:04.2 and 38.2, while Miss Horotiu (Coleman) took 1:21.8, 1:06.6 and 38.2.

Cote D’Or (D Weatherley), who resumes in the open sprint on Saturday, looked bright in her work over 1000m in 1:06.2 and 37.4, while Short Fuse (Hashazumi) and Stand Firm (Singh) cut out their 1000m in 1:04.6 and 37.8 and Donizetti (Ritchie) and Libretti (Chong) took 1:05.5 and 37.2.

On the all-weather track Clarify (S Weatherley) and Barcelo (S McKay) were paired in smart work ahead of the weekend, timed over their last 1000m in 1:02.4 and 36. Danger Dee (J McKay) and Wishful (Yanagida) left 1000m behind in 1:04.8 and 37.2.

On the sand Voler Pour Moi (S Weatherley) did good solo work over 1200m in 1:17.5, 1:03.3 and 37. Divine Love (J Price) finished her work well over 1200m in 1:23.7, 1:08.5 and 40, while Galaxy Miss (Dowling) covered 1000m in 1:08.2 and 38.4, and Beau Geste (K Price) took 1:10.8 and 41.6.
