Matamata Track Work Tuesday 29 August 2017: Recorded by Dennis Ryan
30 Aug 2017

Lining candidates for Saturday’s Tarzino Trophy up against each other at Matamata this morning was difficult with fog ruling out some timing, but form runner Underthemoonlight again looked the part in her work.

Ridden as usual by her trainer Karyn McQuade on the sand, Underthemoonlight was unextended to cut out 1200m in 1:20.4, with last 1000m taking 1:05.8 and the final 600m 38.2. Underthemoonlight has thrived since her win in last week’s Foxbridge Plate and will be a formidable rival in Saturday’s big event, especially if further rain falls in Hastings.

Tarzino Trophy favourite Volpe Veloce was ridden by Michael Coleman in her work on the course proper against the rail in the six-metre position, where the going was heavy after significant overnight rain. Volpe Veloce was never at top over 1000m as she recorded 1:11.9, with the last 600m taking 42.3.

Gingernuts (Bosson) and Perfect Fit (Coleman) went out on the course proper under a heavy fog and could not be timed, but the connections of both were satisfied with their work. Perfect Fit wore blinkers and will have them added to her gear on Saturday.

Griffin (Bosson) and Summer Monsoon (Lammas), who will both run in the El Roca 3YO Sprint at Hastings, were paired in right-handed work on the course proper where they ran their final 600m in 40.7. Resurrect (R Jones) prepared for Hastings with a final 600m in 41.4, while Temple Tiger (Fawcett) and Fortune Kept (Cowan) took 42.4 and Elettra (Wratten) 43.5.

On the all-weather track Amarula (P McKay) and Clarify (S McKay) were paired on smart work over 1000m in 1:04.2 and 35.8. Like other members of the McKay team, they are entered for both Ruakaka and Hastings, with the final decision to be decided by the weather.

Two more of their number, Lucky’s Revenge (Waara) and The Mitigator (S McKay) were keen in the early stages as they cut out 1000m in 1:03 and 38.2.

On the sand Charles Road (S Weatherley) prepared for Ruakaka with tidy work over 1000m in 1:04.8 and 38.2, while his Hastings-bound stablemate Divine Duke (S Weatherley) strode over 1200m in 1:24.1 and 38.4.

La Mia Stella (Roff) and Short Fuse (Khan) were not extended over 1000m in 1:12.2 and 40.8. Fortune Patch (Coleman) covered the same distance in 1:08.2 and 39.3, while Keep On Coming (R Jones) was well held in 1:15.3 and 42.2. Winehouse (Lammas) stretched out over her last 800m in 56.4 and 41.2.
