Matamata Trackwork Tuesday 20 December 2016: Recorded by Dennis Ryan
20 Dec 2016

Volpe Veloce is on target to extend her unbeaten record at Ellerslie on Boxing Day judging by her work at Matamata this morning.

Galloping on the course proper, which was dead with the markers out 18 metres, Volpe Veloce was ridden by her regular work rider Craig Rastrick as she strode from the 1200-metre mark in 1:26.2, with the last 1000m in 1:10.8 and final 600m in 40.8.

The Graham Richardson-trained filly, who took her record to five from five in the Eulogy Stakes 10 days ago, never does a lot in training and looks in excellent order for her next big test, the Gr. 2 Eight Carat Stakes.

Race rival Avec Moi (C Grylls) also worked on the course proper, where she and New Plymouth weekend entry Embeya (D Weatherley) cut out 1200m in 1:19.8, 1:05.1 and 39. Another Ballymore Stables pair, Majic El (D Weatherley) and Henley Road (Bourke) prepared for New Plymouth with 1000m in 1:08 and 39.2.

On the plough, which was dead after rain yesterday, Sound Proposition (Coleman) worked well ahead of the Zabeel Classic on Boxing Day when he completed 1200m in 1:23.1, 1:06.9 and 37.2.

Abidewithme (M Grylls) continued her preparation for the Zabeel Classic with breezy work over 1000m in 1:07.7 and 38. The classy mare will appreciate the step up to 2000 metres in the weight-for-age feature.

Three entries for Monday’s Newmarket Handicap, Snapshot, Los Vargas and Red Striker, all worked well in solo work over 1000 metres. Snapshot (Rastrick) returned 1:06.2 and 37.3, Los Vargas (Rastrick) was kept to 1:09.5 and 38.8, while Red Striker (M Jones) was also well held to record 1:10.2 and 39.8.

Hot In High Heels (Lammas) shaped up pleasingly for the first day at Ellerslie when she and Crackthegoodstuff (S Turner) got through a brisk 1200m in 1:15.8, 1:01.6 and 36.7. Possible Boxing Day runner Capella (Coleman) was keen in her work over 1000m in 1:00.5 and 36.2.

Arraignment (Dowling) and Our King Sway (Lammas) were paired in attractive work over 1000m in 1:04.1 and 37.2. Unfazed (Lammas) and Epic Tale (Fawcett) also did well over the same distance in 1:02.8 and 35.9, while Eight Carat Classic entry Glass Slipper (C Grylls) was not extended to record 1:05.3 and 37.7.

Royal Success (Miller), a form runner for the inaugural Rising Stars Final on Monday, went with Chadsdale (McNab) in well held work over 1000m in 1:07.2 and 39. Tyrone (P McKay) and Rodmar (S McKay) ran the same distance in 1:05.2 and 38.

Two-year-olds Nucleonic (McNab) and Princess Rihanna (C Grylls) were timed over their last 800m in 55.2 and 39.6. Another form runner for Ellerslie, Barnaby (S McKay), and Bachro (Yanigeda) returned 49.8 and 37.5 for their last 800m.

Cool Running (K McQuade) had pace on throughout 1200m in 1:17.2, 1:02.8 and 37.8, while Mistrahma (Gorham) did similar work to record 1:1:15.6, 1:00.9 and 36.8, and Four Degrees (C Grylls) took 1:18.8, 1:03 and 37.3.

Red Keep (M Jones) and Shez Swanky (Newman) prepared for Rotorua next Tuesday with 1200m in 1:22.8, 1:07 and 38.5, Neat As A Pin (Hepi) took 1:23.4, 1:07.2 and 37.5, Star Ella (A Jones) 1:24.3, 1:09 and 41.8, Molly Pond (Grant) 1:19.8, 1:05.2 and 39.8, and Over Torque (A Jones) 1:20.6, 1:06.8 and 39.4.

Over 1000m Rotorua entry Joe Cargo (S Turner) recorded 1:05.4 and 39.6, Miss Sequoia (Grant) took 1:08.6 and 40.8, and Hurry (C Grylls), who runs next at Ellerslie, 1:10.5 and 39.9.

Cha Siu Bao (Bhiwani) and Mr Selfridge (S Weatherley) were restricted to 1000m in 1:14.1 and 44.7, while Savile Row (D Weatherley) was also kept to three-quarter-pace. He looks well after a break and is likely to target the Levin Classic.

On the all-weather track Barcelo (P McKay), who runs at Ellerslie on Monday, and second day runner Al Pacino (S McKay) cut out a sound 1000m in 1:03.8 and 36.3.
